Black and Minority Ethnic Communities: Environmental Justice & Climate Change

The next Networking meeting will take place on Monday 26th March 2012 at the Sunderland Bangladeshi Community Centre, 30 Tatham Street, Sunderland SR1 2QD.  It starts at 4.00 pm and should be finished by 6.30 pm.  The event will give people from black and minority ethnic communities a chance to get together to reflect informally on the concept of Environmental Justice and Climate Change.  It will also help to start the consultation for the Big Lottery Fund's Communities Living Sustainably funding programme that the Network is leading on.

Attendance needs to be confirmed by Friday 23rd March.

With support from the Vaux Foundation at the Community Foundation for Tyne and Wear & Northumberland, the Network hopes to gather stories from ex service personnel living in Sunderland

With support from the Tyne and Wear Infrastructure Consortium (BASIS) and the Federation for Community Development Learning (Improving Reach), the Network contracted Ranjana Bell to construct a directory of services for, and by, black and minority ethnic communities in Tyne and Wear.  Click on the link below to view the document.  If your organisation is incorrectly listed, please contact the Network as quickly as you can.  It would also be useful to know how your services have changed over the last twelve months. The Singh Twins - Retrospective

Exhibition 2nd October, 2010 - 3rd January, 2011

The Singh Twins launched their retrospective exhibition in Sunderland's Wintergardens on Thursday 30th September, 2010.  Amrit and Rabindra are contemporary British artists of international standing.

The exhibition brings together some of their older work with newer and commissioned pieces.

They are pictured here with members of Sangini.

Creative Cohesion Launch

A new centre for creativity in Sunniside, Sunderland has just opened.  Converted from the vacant Vince Newton Garage and Showroom site on Nile Street, Creative Cohesion will provide, not only studios for artists, but space for community, arts and business activities.

Several of the artists were influenced by a trade mission to Washington DC Sunderland's sister city, in 2009.  Wajid Hussain, Becon's Advisor the Sunderland BME Network Ltd, read a poem developed by working with Creative Cohesion's artists before the launch.

Wajid is pictured with Anne Tye (Cohesion Manager and Co-Founder), Phil Vickery (Chairman and Co-Founder), (Cllr Florence Anderson (Deputy Leader of the Council) and Paul Callaghan (Chairman of ONE North East).

Improving Reach

The Federation for Community Development Learning (FCDL) and the Sunderland BME Network is offering an accredited Training for Trainers programme for local black and minority ethnic groups across the Tyne and Wear.  To develop their skills trainers will be involved in delivering short sessions such as

  • working in groups
  • what is community development work?
  • representing your community
  • getting involved in partnerships
  • listening skills
  • making meetings effective
  • report writing; and
  • presentation skills.

The training is designed to fit around your needs; to minimise the disruption to your work. Currently, we can only work with fifteen people from across the Tyne and Wear local authority areas. However there are funds available to support any additional needs that you might have (e.g. childcare and backfill costs).  Funding support is from the Improving Reach Programme.

The Network is also working with BECON and The Equalities Coalition to gather information about the kind of support different black and minority ethnic groups need. To do this we want to set up a reference group in each area. If you take part in a reference group consultation your organisation will receive £50 towards the cost of taking part.  This work will help to inform the work of the Tyne and Wear Infrastructure Consortium and is funded by the Big Lottery's BASIS programme.

Being Seen, Being Heard (31st March 2009)

Sunderland BME Network held a very successful event on 31st March, 2009. Over seventy people took part in an ambitious networking event which started at Midday and ran until 7 pm.

This session made use of a bit of e-gadgetry to enable the participants to instantly record their views. The equipment itself got a positive vote of support.

Those with the stamina to stay for the final session, heard from Zibula, an African band associated with Jambo Africa and Sylvia Zalas of Gypsy Dance as well as having a mixture of African and Malaysian food to choose from.
